Three To Take Plea Next Year

Three former executives of Shop and Save supermarket will take plea in the High Court in Suva in March next year.

Abhisaeth Abhimaanu, Kavishay Abhimaanu and Amrita Anand appeared before Justice Daniel Goundar yesterday charged with money laundering.

The first accused, Abhisaeth Abhimaanu, is charged with seven counts of money laundering, while the second accused, Kavishay Abhimaanu, has been charged with four counts of money laundering and the third accused, Anand is charged with 79 counts of money laundering.

It is alleged between 2011 and 2016, while they were employed at the supermarket’s headquarters in Nasinu, they paid additional salaries to themselves, which was picked up during an internal audit conducted by the then Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority in 2017 and referred to the Criminal Investigations Department’s Anti-Money Laundering Unit.

The first accused, Abhisaeth Abhimaanu, 36, who is the company’s former chief finance officer, is alleged to have received more than $99,000.

The second accused, Kavishay Abhimaanu, 37, who is the former chief executive, is alleged to have received $75,000.

The third accused, Anand, 31, who held the post of Human Resources Payroll Clerk, is alleged to have received more than $46,000.

The two brothers have been released on bail on a cash bail bond sum of $5000 each with two sureties and a bail bond sum of $5000 each. Anand was granted bail on a cash bail bond sum of $1000 and one surety bail bond.

State counsel Mezabeen Khan asked for 21 days to file information and disclosures.

Bail was extended for the three accused.

The matter was adjourned to March 2, 2019, for plea.
