5 People Questioned By Police After Being Caught Trying To Smuggle Contraband Into Remand Centre

Vigilant surveillance by CCTV officers of the Fiji Corrections Service Remand Center in Korovou has landed five civilians in hot water.

The five civilians were taken into Police custody for questioning yesterday and are likely to be charged for allegedly trying to smuggle contraband items into the Remand Center.

The items found included marijuana and tobacco leaves.

Deputy Commissioner of Corrections Senior Superintendent Apimeleki Taukei said this should serve as a deterrent as they are likely to face jail time now.

“Dealing with contraband has always been a major challenge for us,’’ DCC Taukei said.

“But  what  these  visitors  do  not  realise  is  if  caught  they  could  also  find themselves behind bars.’’
