Seven serving prisoners, one of them on crutches and another with a heavily bandaged arm, appeared at a special court sitting in Suva yesterday before Magistrate Robert Green.

They were charged with one count of damaging property and one count of escaping from lawful custody.

The seven were Filipe Delana, Ulaiasi Qalomai, Mesulame Waqabaca, Josaia Usumaki, Bainivalu Tuimatavesi, Solomone Qurai and Peniasi Qalibau.

It was alleged that on December 24, 2018, the seven men at Lami, willfully and unlawfully damaged the property of Fiji Corrections Services, including a mattress cover valued at $39, a blanket valued at $13, a pillow case valued at $12, a mosquito net valued at $25, 80mmPVC Pipe valued at $17.50 and 20mm deformed bars valued at $31.55 all to the total value of $138.05.

Also on December 24, the seven – being serving prisoners – escaped from Naboro Maximum Prison.

Six of the men had requested the assistance of the Legal Aid Commission while Delana told the court that he would represent himself.

The case has been adjourned to January 25, 2019.

Meanwhile, Qalibau was due to be released on January 15, so he would be transferred to the Suva Remand Centre to await January 25.
