Depressed And Alone? Pick Up The Phone And Ask For Help

There are reports that two doctors recently committed suicide.

This is worrying and begs the question- are we doing enough to listen to the voices silently crying for help?

We have lost too many young lives in Fiji to suicide.

If you feel that this is the end of the road for you and nothing but taking your life is a way out, stop and remember, you are not alone.

Every one of us has gone through this phase in our lives where ending it all seems like the easy thing to do.

Fortunately, many of us have been able to get through that phase. You can too. We have a volunteer organisation where people are willing to listen to you.

They can be reached on 132454. Someone will listen, someone always does, it is only a matter of reaching out.

Child Helpline Fiji – Free call 1325 in Fiji Child Helpline Fiji is another nationwide toll free helpline and support service that targets children and youths.

This helpline is to give a voice to all those children and young people who are in need of advice, support, care and protection. It is staffed by qualified experienced counsellors and it is confidential.

We have the position of experienced counsellors at schools too now. But despite all these services, we still have too many young Fijians taking their lives.

Why? Are we able to understand their silence?

There has been an understanding that mainstream media refrain from covering instances of suicides in case it encourages copycat behaviour.

Perhaps it is time we address the issue of how we can cover this very serious issue to discourage others from following suit.

This is no longer a taboo issue. When we have in increasing number of people killing themselves, it becomes a national issue.

Depression is real, the feeling of loneliness is real. You may be able to save a life by listening.

Are you listening Fiji?
