The head of eCommerce and Corporate Affairs for Vodafone Fiji has paid tribute to the sheer hard work and sacrifices our forefathers made so that we can have a good education.

Shailendra Prasad made the remarks during the golden jubilee celebration at Bulileka College in Labasa on Thursday night.

“This must never ever be forgotten,” Mr Prasad said.

“I salute and honour those who were founders who sacrificed to establish Bulileka Sanatan College.”

Mr Prasad congratulated all those who had contributed for the betterment, upgrade and progress of the school to what it is today.

“However, we must stop for a moment and think how the life of a teacher or a student would have been 20, 30, 40 or 50 years ago with no smart phones,” he said.

“I am sure you will agree it was not easy.

“I believe the importance of building schools, libraries, laboratories for the betterment of students’ future should never be underestimated or forgotten with the advent of technology,” he said.

Mr Prasad said the only God that students of today knew when you ask any question is Google Bhagwan.

He said just ask any question on the internet using Google search and it will give you the answer.

“It is all too easy with smartphones and tablets in your hand today to quickly forget the struggles that students of the past had to go through to gain knowledge,” Mr Prasad said.

“It has its rightful place in the annals of history.

“What is more important is that life at that time, with no roads, no good transportation, no modern tools and building materials was much harder and therefore building a school was not easy.

“Yet those who cared about our future never gave up.”
