The Fiji Airways Fijian 7s team hopes of defending the London Sevens were nearly dented in their first pool game against Kenya on Saturday.

Team captain Paula Dranisinukula eventually saved the day with a try for the 24-17 victory.’

Coach Gareth Baber was obviously disappointed with the team’s defensive play as they continued to allow the opposition back into the game.

They failed to make the tackles in all their pool games against Kenya, France and Samoa.

The Sir Gordon Tietjens-coached Samoa blew a 12-7 halftime lead to lose 17-26 as the islanders hard luck story continues.

The Samoans had the opportunity to score and win the game but Asaeli Tuivuaka hard work in the ruck allowed Fiji to win the ball resulting in Waisea Nacuqu scoring in extra time,

The Votua, Ba native played well for Fiji on day one.

France performed admirably against Fiji and deserved better than a 31-10 reverse but Alasio Naduva, Seremaia Tuwai and Livai Ikanikoda all went over to seal their place at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo and Cup quarterfinal spot in London.
