The Vodafone Hibiscus Festival is definitely returning to Suva this year.

Tagged as the “Mother of all Festivals”, the Vodafone Hibiscus Festival had to be moved to Nasinu last year because of the unavailability of an adequate venue.

It is understood that a couple of venues within the Suva area are being checked out to host the event this year.

Topping the list are the Suva Grammar School grounds, multipurpose courts next to the Vodafone Arena and the original home of the festival, Albert Park.

In 2016 and 2017, the festival was staged at the Vodafone Arena as Albert Park underwent renovation. After Albert Park was reopened the Government then closed the door for any festival at the venue, simply to protect the green.

While there were rumours that the Suva Grammar School grounds was a prominent choice for hosting the big event, nothing has been confirmed yet.

Suva Grammar School principal Chandran Segran Pillay said there had been some initial talks with the organising committee of the Vodafone Hibiscus Festival concerning the venue.

“They have visited the grounds once or twice, but there is nothing on paper as of now. There is no confirmation yet,” Mr Pillay said.

He also said if the Hibiscus Events Group wanted to use the school grounds, he would have to discuss it with other stakeholders, and only then would he be able to make a confirmation.

Earlier this week Fiji Sun was reliably informed that the Hibiscus Events Group Incorporated (HEGI) executive chair, Hirdesh Prasad, was no longer heading the event. So more changes may be expected.

Mr Prasad declined to comment on the matter.

Queries sent last night to the Minister for Local Government, Premila Kumar, remained unanswered when this edition went to press.
