Members of the public have been told of the importance of checking their e-card balance to avoid disappointments and to stop paying cash to drivers.

Fiji Bus Operators Association General Secretary Rohit Latchan said passengers were urged to be attentive to their bus card balances and to regularly top up to avoid disappointments when boarding the bus.

“The only money exchange between the passenger and the bus driver is when there is a purchase of disposable e-cards by the passenger,” Mr Latchan said.

Member of Parliament Lynda Tabuya mentioned in her contribution to the Budget debate the exceptions that should be made to drivers who are compassionate towards their passengers.

“We have all seen the increased aggressiveness in which the LTA imposes traffic and e-ticketing fines, even to the extent of punishing honesty and compassion, in the occasional situation that our people need to get home and did not top up their e-card in time so offered to pay cash and the bus driver shows compassion to the passenger who travels every day on his bus,” she said.

“It is by law that bus drivers are to carry disposable card so if this passengers don’t have money in their card. It is the law and no exceptions will be made no matter what,” Mr Latchan said

“If there are no disposable cards, then the passenger will be forced to top up their card before they can board the bus and that is the law.”
