Editorial:

It is encouraging to see Lautoka City Council taking the proactive approach to raise the standard of hygiene in restaurants and bakeries in the city.

The council has known for sometime that some eating places and bakeries did not measure up to acceptable standards of hygiene.

Instead of cracking the whip, raiding and penalising those found guilty, it has taken a sensible approach.

Council chief executive officer Jone Nakauvadra and his team must be commended for their initiative.

They decided to hold a workshop for restaurant and bakery owners to inform them of the law and the council’s expectation. They have also given the industry a grace period during which they are expected to bring their standards up to the required levels.

If the operators fail to comply then the council has legitimate and justifiable grounds to begin prosecution.

More than 150 restaurant and bakery managers and operators learned about food safety and hygiene.

Mr Nakauvadra made it clear that their intention was not to go and penalise them, but to work with them, create awareness, tell them the law and the requirements and give them a grace period of two weeks to go and comply with and adhere to the entire requirement.

This initiative should be adopted by other municipal councils which also face similar challenges.

When eating places and bakeries raise their standard it would attract customers and boost their business.

It also lifts the profile of the towns and cities. It would be a win-win situation for all the stakeholders.
