A Fijian rugby league side consisted of local-based players will be playing in next year’s NSW Cup.

The move was spearheaded by rugby legend and former Vodafone Fiji Bati captain Petero Civoniceva.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, Civoniceva said he got good news from NSWRL on Thursday.

He did not wish to elaborate further as the big announcement was to be made at the Petero Civoniceva’s Awards Night, which was still going on when this edition went to press last night.

“It’s 5 years of hard work,” he said.

“In 2020 the team will play in the NSW Duo’s Ron Massey competition which is the 3rd tier and by 2021 we will be in the NSW Canterbury.

HARD WORK

“The real hard work starts now.”

Civoniceva said he is going to discuss with FNRL and start the trials as soon as possible.

“We are looking to contract 30 players who will be at our training base,” he said.

“We will take 18 players to a game and the rest goes back to the local comp and help lift the standard.”

He added that there will be 12 home games where Australian clubs and fans will travel to Fiji.
