France based Sam Matavesi says training alongside his elder brother Josh for the Fiji Airways Flying Fijians is extra special.

The 27-year old was among the Fiji Airways Flying Fijians squad training at the Sigatoka Sand Dunes yesterday.

“It is an honour as it is biggest pinnacle of your career to play for your country,”Sam said.

“And to do it with your brother is extra special.

“It is tough to be with the team and biggest thing is coming here. I am older than other hookers and they are very good too.”

Matavesi has maternal links to Vanuabalavu in Lau and just completed  four months stint with French Top 14 club Toulouse.

“There I played with World Cup winners, French international players and also worked with head coach who is also the French national coach. The season has been great,” he said.

Matavesi said that he has been learning a lot from former hooker Sunia Koto.

“First time in the dunes and it is very tough. After the first fourth set I felt my leg was up,” he said.

Meanwhile, Josh Matavesi is among the seven players undergoing various rehab programmes. Also in the list are Levani Botia, Semi Radradra, Kini Murimurivalu, Nikola Matawalu, Vereniki Goneva and Setareki Tuicuvu.

The Flying Fijians resume training on Monday.
