Former New Zealand Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade Murray McCully was awarded the Companion of the Order of Fiji by President Jioji Konrote at State House yesterday.

Mr McCully’s efforts as a Cabinet minister in getting relief to Fiji after the devastation of Cyclone Winston was recognised by the Government.

He did not anticipate being awarded for his efforts.

“Fiji and New Zealand have shared strong ties and are neighbours,” Mr McCully said.

“I appreciate this gesture and I had not anticipated getting it. So yes, it came to me as a surprise when I received an invitation.”

Part of the help provided by New Zealand included:

  • A New Zealand P3 Orion which conducted surveillance flights to assess damage;
  • A 13-strong Joint Response Team made up of staff from NZDF, Ministry of Health and the NZ Fire Service to assess physical damage and health risks;
  • Vital aid supplies, including tents, tarpaulins, tools, generators and food, delivered by daily RNZAF C-130 Hercules flights;
  • Providing the Navy’s support vessel HMNZS Canterbury with patrol vessel HMNZS Wellington;
  • Four helicopters;
  • New Zealand Defence Force and New Zealand Fire Service engineers, including plumbers, electricians, and field engineers to help Fiji authorities repair public buildings and clear debris; a
  • A Medical Assistance Team to provide mobile clinics.

Mr McCully is headed back to New Zealand today.

He said would have loved to stay back and watch the Maori All Blacks play against the Flying Fijians.
