The Vodafone Northern Kaji Rugby Festival, organised with the aim to nurture rugby at grassroots level, began at Subrail Park, Labasa yesterday.

The organising committee president, Tevita Kubunavanua, said, eight zones which are Bua, Cakaudrove, Macuata, Macuata South, Buca Bay, Udu/Tawake, Taveuni and Rabi are participating in this event.

The competition will see teams battle it out in the Under- 9, U10, U11, U12, U13 and U14 grades.

“This is the second year we’ve this event in Labasa where all primary schools are invited to participate,” Kubunavanua said.

Chief guest at the opening was Vodafone Fiji Limited northern manager Arunesh Vishwa said, that together with the Fiji Rugby Union, they are working to build a solid foundation for young players to follow.

“The idea is to mould them so they can continue on from footworks of a few legendary players on the local and international fields as well,” Vishwa said.

“The exposure to playing at this level comes with discipline and teamwork. There are crucial elements in developing these young players to become better individuals.

“We all have been witnesses to the success of last year’s competition.

“I would like to acknowledge the efforts that have been put forth by the coaches, students, schools, teachers, parents and guardians in bringing the competition this far.”
