The active role that a former patient of the Colonial War Memorial (CWM) Hospital played has boosted the hospital’s services.

Thanks to Nancy Hopkins, the hospital received elbow crutches, X-ray viewing boxes, moon boots and splints from New Zealand.

Ms Hopkins, a Kiwi, was a patient at the hospital in 2017 and early 2018. She was sent to New Zealand for further treatment.

Specialist Orthopedics surgeon Dr Pauliasi Bauleka said through her contacts with the Dr Roy Craig and his team from Hutt Valley District Health Board in Wellington, the equipment were donated.

The handover was done yesterday.

Dr Bauleka said Orthopaedic Surgeons of Orthopaedic Outreach Australia, who come to help Fiji hospitals in orthopaedic surgeries plus donations, also provided 21 different items of equipment to the hospital two weeks ago.

“This equipment, especially crutches, are important for patients to use before and after surgery in terms of moving around,” he said.

He raised the challenges of the hospital where equipment as such is expensive and patients are advised to get their own.

“The equipment is only available at some of the hardware stores and chemists, but are expensive,” he said.

“Before, we used to have a wooden crutch, which was cheap, but we couldn’t sustain that service in the past years.

“Rehabilitation is the most important part of treatment in any patient.”
