The commemoration ceremony held by the National Fire Authority on Wednesday, paid tribute to their counterparts who lost their lives in the line of duty in Fiji and abroad, in fires and catastrophes such as the inferno that engulfed the World Trade Centre Twin Towers in the U.S.A., from a terrorist attack, on September 11, 2001.

The Public Diplomacy Officer for the United States Embassy in Fiji, Rebecca Knepper, mentioned that “This tribute is not just to those firefighters but to all who lost their lives in the terrorist attack that happened on September 11, 2001”.

Ms Knepper also mentioned that firefighters who put their lives at risk to ensure the safety of strangers were not thinking of getting killed when they went to put a fire out and they did not call themselves, “Heroes”.

Chief Fire Officer Qionilau Moceitai said, “It is very important to commemorate the loss of firefighters who have lost their lives while doing their duty”.

The courage these firefighters have shown to save the lives of other people is something that needs to be remembered every time.

“The safety of firefighters is very much prominent to NFA and this is something that is considered first,” said Mr Moceitai.

According to Mr Moceitai only one local firefighter has perished in the past year and so far there has been none this year.
