The Magistrates Court in Suva has issued a production order for a former 58-year-old Suva lawyer who is facing drug charges.

Shazran Abdul Lateef’s case was called before Magistrate Jioji Boseiwaqa yesterday.

For the first case, Lateef is charged with one count of being found in possession of illicit drugs.

It is alleged that on August 7, 2018, at about 6 pm a team of Police officers raided a prominent Suva hotel after receiving a tip-off.

The accused was allegedly found with 0.0136 grams of methamphetamine.

In the matter, State prosecutor from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Momita Chowdhury told the court that the state had served the proposed agreed facts to the defence.

Defence lawyer Sharoneel Deo told the court that the defence sought time to narrow down the facts and sought time to execute the same with Lateef.

In another matter, Lateef is charged alongside with former Miss Hibiscus contestant and activist Zoe Maharaj-Moore, 29.

For the first offence of being found in possession of illicit drugs, it is alleged that Lateef and Maharaj-Moore on July 14, 2019, at Raiwaqa, without lawful authority were in possession of 7.89 grams of methamphetamine, an illicit drug.

For the second offence of being found in possession of illicit drugs, it is alleged that Lateef and Maharaj-Moore on July 14, 2019, at Raiwaqa, without lawful authority were in possession of 12.49 grams of cocaine, an illicit drug.

For the third offence of being found in possession of illicit drugs, it is alleged that Lateef and Maharaj-Moore on July 14, 2019, at Raiwaqa, without lawful authority were in possession of 2.5 grams of cannabis Sativa, an illicit drug.

The defence lawyer for Lateef, Filimoni Vosarogo told the court that the accused was on bail for the matter however he was remanded in another case.

He sought time for the accused to be present in court.

The matter has been adjourned for mention on September 17.
