$1.2 million has been allocated for the construction of four new fire stations around the country.

So far the National Fire Authority has 18 fire stations and work is being done to build new ones in Lami, Korovou, Nabouwalu and Savusavu.

First, up will be the construction of the Lami Fire Station, which has started with earthworks underway on the site near the cement factory at Wailekutu.

National Fire Authority chairperson John O’Connor said this was part of their initiative to increase the number of fire stations around the country.

“The Lami Fire Station will be very essential because it will cover the Lami area, both residential and industrial,” Mr O’Connor said.

“It will also be first responders for fires in rural areas.

“The Lami Fire Station will have one fire truck and an ambulance as well. This is the way forward for NFA because ambulance services will be part of NFA.

“It also means that response within the Lami area will not be hampered by heavy traffic because the first responders will not have to cross the bridge.”

News of this development has had residents anticipating a faster response if there was a fire Lami.

Lami resident Gavidi Cakobau said this was good news for the municipality. He said Lami was growing and a fire station was needed.

“It is about time that we have a fire station,” he said.

Veisari resident Usman Ali said a fire station in Lami would greatly improve response time during emergencies.

“Fire is not the only emergency. Road accidents are a common occurrence on the highway. I look forward to this new development.”
