Man Sentenced To 4 Years Behind Bars For Possession Of Illicit Drugs

A man has been sentenced to four years and six months by the Nausori Magistrates Court for a drug-related offence.

Rakesh Charan appeared before Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne on Friday.

He was convicted of one count of possession of illicit drugs, contrary to section (5)(A) of the Illicit Drugs Control Act Number nine of 2004 (Illicit Drugs Control Act).

The court heard that Charan had in his possession without lawful authority 57.5grams of methamphetamine, an illicit drug which is commonly known as ice.

Upon gaining information, the Police came to Charan’s house in Navuso and found white crystals in the washroom. The drugs, which were concealed inside the ceiling was shown to Police by his wife.

Magistrate Somaratne said: “The total amount of drugs in your possession suggests that this was not for personal possession and there was some element of commercial purpose also.”

“If this was released to the market it could have brought misery and ruined the young lives of Fijians.

“The drugs were analysed by the Fiji Police Forensic Laboratory and found to be 57.5grams of meth,” Justice Somaratne said.

Charan has to serve four years of his sentence, in order to be eligible for parole. He has 28 days to appeal his conviction.
