Nausori businessman, Ravindra Singh, has appealed against his conviction and sentence.

Singh, 44, appeared before Judge Justice Aruna Aluthge at the High Court in Suva yesterday.

He was sentenced to two years and six months imprisonment with a non-parole period of two years for one count of possession of illicit drugs by the Magistrates Court in Nausori on September 10, 2019.

On March 23, 2018, Singh had in his possession, without lawful authority, 0.2 grams of methamphetamine, an illicit drug which is commonly known as “ice”.

Police upon information received, raided Singh’s yard in Manoca, Nausori and searched his office. Before they conduct a strip search, Singh took the plastic containing some white crystal from his underwear and handed that to the search team.

The same was analysed in the Fiji Police Forensic Laboratory and found to be 0.2 grams of methamphetamine.

In court yesterday, State Prosecutor Sheenal Swastika, told the court the matter was for first call and she sought time to obtain a copy of the court records for the appeal.

Singh’s lawyer Akuila Naco told the court that the appeal was against Singh’s conviction and sentence imposed by the Magistrates Court and that the appeal was filed within the 28 days’ timeframe.

The matter has been adjourned for mention on November 26.
