It happened at the 2016 Olympic Games at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and again at the Oceania 7s Championship in Suva yesterday.

The Japan men’s rugby 7s team scored an upset 17-14 win over New Zealand in a thriller.

The Paulo Nawalu coached- side started strongly and dominated the first half before the Kiwis fought back to hold them 7-7 at halftime.

The Japanese fought on to record a close win with Yoshikazu Fujita kicking over the winning penalty.

He said the win is a plus for their preparations for next year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo.

“To kick the winning penalty is just amazing and the players enjoyed every moment of that win,” he said.

“New Zealand as always is a good team so we are happy to have beaten them here.

“Now we shift our focus to tomorrow’s games and will see how it goes from there on.”
