A location for the new Nakasi Market has been identified.

This was revealed by the Minister for Industry, Trade, Tourism, Local Government, Housing and Community Development, Premila Kumar while meeting with the Nasinu Town Council last Friday.

“The area has been identified at this stage. It is just the area that is identified now; this means there is a lot more work that needs to be done,” Mrs Kumar said.

“Other work requires the transfer of land, planning, designing, land preparation and then the construction phase. This is a long process,” she said.

“The value will be based on the design. First, we have to do a demand survey to establish how many people we want to accommodate in that Nakasi Market.

“We can only do that by looking at the number of vendors selling on the roadside now. We have to count all of them and then we have to have some surplus stalls as well.

“For the Nakasi Market, we are looking at the area at the back of RB Patel but talks are still going on.

Mrs Kumar said there were several projects for the Nakasi-Nasinu area.

She said there are so many different projects that are undertaken by the Government in each and every town or city.

“In Nakasi, there is an area where a children’s park will be built. The design has been completed, the next stage is the implementation of the works that has been designed and passed.”

NAKASI

The growth of Suva as a metropolitan area drew people to Suva from all over Fiji.

This influx of people allowed the developments of many suburbs along the North Kings Highway.

The freehold land title enticed people to buy land and settle over a period of time.

Nakasi has people from all over Fiji with the majority from Labasa, Ba, Nadi and the outer islands.

Nakasi (9½ Miles) is a suburb located along the Suva – Nausori corridor, in the Central Division.

The 9½ Miles factor is also used to identify the locality as it denotes the distance from Suva as it forms the common identification of the suburbs along the Kings Highway from Suva to Nausori.

Nakasi is located 15 km north-east of Suva city and 5 km south of Nausori.

It falls under the jurisdiction of the local government area of the township of Nausori.

Nakasi is one of the largest of the many suburbs along the Suva-Nausori corridor. The current population stands at 18,919.
