The Land Transport Authority has maintained its position that there are no increases in minibus fares in the country.

Members of the public who travel regularly in minibuses from Lautoka to Ba have raised concerns about drivers increasing the fare from $2.50 to $3 for late-night trips.

Divya Jyoti said she had sent her complaints many times to the Land Transport Authority’s texting platform, 582.

“Since February 2019, drivers are charging us $2.50 till to date. Numerous complaints have been sent to LTA on 582, but nothing has been done so far,” she said.

Another frequent minibus traveller who wished to remain anonymous said she travels from Lautoka to Naviyago, Ba, with her husband.

“The normal fare is $2.50 but after 10 pm they increase it to $3. I am not sure if they are all doing this, but we know that the drivers also need money so maybe they are aware of it but are keeping this just between themselves,” she said.

The Viti Mini Bus Association president, Bola Saumaka, said he was not aware of the issue.

“I am not aware of this happening, but there will be a change to serve the interests of the public and the drivers because the distance and time of trips need to be taken into account,” he said.

The Land Transport Authority has maintained its position that there are no increases in minibus fares in the country, regardless of the routes which are under regulatory control.
