Prisons are on high alert for any attempted breakout by inmates during this Christmas festive period.

Fiji Corrections Service staff members do not want a repeat of what happened in December last year.

Seven inmates escaped from the Naboro Maximum. But they were recaptured within 24 hours.

It is understood that the Christmas festive atmosphere drives inmates to escape because they want to be with loved ones.

Commissioner of Fiji Corrections Service Commander Francis Kean confirmed they were tightening security. He spoke after their family church service at Lambert Hall, Flagstaff, Suva, yesterday.

He said some Corrections officers would be on Christmas leave and this would be a good time for them to spend quality time with their families. Some, he said, would be working and they had been instructed to be vigilant.

“If there is a breakout during this festive season only those on duty would be tasked to recapture them,” he said.

Inmates, he said, should be reminded that escaping from prison was also a criminal offence.

He thanked the families of the Corrections officers for their support during the year.
