The Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete, has one goal – to contain the measles outbreak in the next two weeks.

His comments come as a nine-month-old child from Davuilevu in Nausori is the 19th confirmed case.

The child stayed at Saumakia Settlement in Naitasiri and the Korovou Prison Compound in Suva.

This child is currently admitted in a stable condition under isolation at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.

Dr Waqainabete is also assuring the public that the new school term next year will not be affected by the measles outbreak.

He said the measles taskforce would complete the mass vaccination in Suva by the end of Christmas Eve. Of the 19 cases confirmed to date, 12 are from the Serua/Namosi provinces, four from Suva and three from Rewa.

Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander, Rear Admiral Viliame Naupoto announced that the Fiji Navy would help the Ministry of Health take the vaccination programme to the outer islands.

Meanwhile, companies that had planned big events in Suva have cancelled them. These cancellations include Christmas in the Park by Digicel, Vodafone Fiji with its similar programme and so has the Fijian Broadcasting Corporation.
