The Fiji Bus Operators Association is pushing for an increase in bus fares.

The association has called on the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and Government stakeholders to act urgently to avert a full-scale collapse of the bus industry.

Association president Nisar Ali Shah said: “We want to sit, talk and resolve all outstanding matters between our members, the LTA and the government. This is an emergency and needs to be handled like an emergency.”

The association said the Dominion Transport Company Limited closed down after being unable to operate on a fare structure that was 10 years out of touch.

He said operational costs had risen.

“I declare our solidarity with our members, Dominion Transport Company Limited and its managing director Mr Satya Nadan, as well as other operators including West Bus and Nikhil Transport, whose businesses have also collapsed,” he said.

“In fact, bus operators are cutting back on unsustainable routes in an effort to cut costs and stay afloat.

“The industry is at a critical stage, and could collapse due to the low profits, deteriorating roads and competition from carriers and minibuses.”

Mr Shah said the new fares were agreed two years ago.

However, it is yet to be published in the gazette.

As of last year, Fijian Competitions and Consumer Commission is responsible for deciding, if an increase in bus fares is warranted.

The commission had hinted that if there were submissions, the process would stay the same and there would be public consultations.

LTA opted not to respond to the statements by the bus association, saying the matter is out of their hands now.
