Police in Nadi say they have successfully arrested a number of drug peddlers near the Nadi Market, Nadi Police Station Officer Inspector Mohammed Riyaz revealed.

He made the statement while responding to a member of the Fiji Taxi Association at a forum who raised the issue of people seen selling cigarettes in Nadi.

The forum was held on Wednesday at the Nadi Civic Centre, attended by members in Nadi and the association heads.

“We have arrested a number of them and we will continue to do that,” Inspector Riyaz said.

“We are tracking down other drug peddlers too. If you can see the Koroivolu Park we have made a number of arrests there. So, things won’t happen overnight, have some patience and let’s work together.”

The inspector also highlighted to the taxi drivers that the lack of taxis operating at night has led the high presence of illegal operators.

“Since we are targeting illegal operators we are having a big problem with them at night. What is happening is once we target them they are no longer in town, once they are gone, then how will people get to their destination when you are not there to provide the services,” he told the forum.

He said those who did not pay their fares would be dealt with by the Police.

Fiji Taxi Association general secretary Ashwin Ashish Lal also requested additional Police officers be deployed to patrol the streets of Nadi so that taxi drivers could carry out their operations safely.

Land Transport Authority’s Nadi branch manager, Livai Bolaika, also urged permit holders to carry out the necessary background checks on their drivers before hiring them.

“We’ve seen there are quite a lot of drivers driving there without a licence,” he said.

“You need to check your vehicle, you need to monitor your vehicle. Sometimes you give your car to a driver and you do not know that he gives it to someone else at night or during the day.”

The forum saw members of the association, officials and other stakeholders discuss issues concerning taxi services in Nadi.
