Two families in Vusuya, Nausori, yesterday have lost everything after a fire, which started from one house, spread to a neighbouring house.

This takes the toll to seven residential fires in a span of nine days.

The corrugated iron and timber house, belonging to Manmohan Singh, was being rented by Parvin Kumar Datt and his family. This is the house where the fire started.

Mr Datt’s step son, Nikil Singh, 18, said the house was empty.

“My sister Darshika, brother Navnit and I had gone to the shop when we saw smoke coming out of Darshika’s room,” he said.

“I ran from the shop and into the house. By this time, the smoke was too thick and I realised that nothing can be done.

“I called the National Fire Authority as fast as I could and then called my family members.”

Mr Datt, who works at the Vinod Patel timber yard in Laucala Beach, stood by the roadside looking devastated.

“Nothing is left. My first worry is to look for a place for my family. Then, three of my children are going back to school,” he said.

Darshika, 16, will start Year 12 this year at Vunimono. Right now, a big question mark hangs over that matter.

Neighbours spoke of strong winds when the fire started around 2.30pm. Soon enough the flames caught the house next door and it did not take long for the wooden walls to burn.

Home owner and taxi driver, Avinesh Singh, was notified of the incident while in Suva. His wife Sarita and their three children were at home at the time.

“Nothing was saved. I will be moving my family to the family home, which is behind our house. My father is now coming from the United States when he was informed of the fire,” Mr Singh said.

Mr Singh said he would start rebuilding soon.

Meanwhile, for Mr Datt and his family, they spent the night at a neighbour’s home.
