Fiji Taxi Association General Secretary Ashwin Ashish Lal said as of last year the open taxi base zone system has been prohibited within the Nadi area.

Mr Lal said this was affirmed in November last year when the Civil High Court in Suva ruled in favour of the Fiji Taxi Association ordering the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to carry out consultations with all stakeholders including and not limiting them to the Fiji Taxi Association or other taxi groups before making any future determination for a new taxi permit quota and the open base system.

“Open zone has been stopped, every taxi has to operate from their own bases and those that don’t have bases, they have to follow the regulation,” he said.

“If there is a negotiation between the zone taxis and the base taxis then that is okay but if not then you cannot park in another taxi base, you may pick passengers and keep driving but do not park in that base because that taxi is paying the fee for his base.”

He said a possible solution would be to establish a rural taxi base as there were more than 500 taxi zone permits distributed for the Nadi area.

The Nadi and Sigatoka Board of Special Administrators Chairperson Debra Sadranu said signboards would be erected by the end of this month to notify drivers which vehicles were allowed to park at the respective bases.

“We will also be working closely with FRA (Fiji Roads Authority) and LTA discussing the bases for zone taxis in rural areas,” she said.

“We need to address these issues but this is not going to work if we’re all crashing on each other’s zones. So we as a council will work with LTA and FRA and see how we can overcome these with additional taxi bases in rural areas.”
