Families in Lautoka have opted to be safe rather than sorry later as they brace for Tropical Disturbance 04F. Fiji Meteorological Service predicts the storm could affect the Fiji group from tomorrow.

Lautoka taxi driver, Nikhil Chand and his wife, Sharin Shanita, were seen putting up shutters on their corrugated iron home at Tavakubu yesterday.

“We always follow weather advisory for approaching cyclones or inclement weather. My home has never been affected, because we do not take any warnings lightly, We always prepare to keep our families safe,” he said.

The Met Service believes that the system known as Tropical Depression 04F will be named in the next day or so.

The tropical depression is yet to turn into a tropical cyclone, however chances of that happening are increasing.

The Met Service is also expecting the system when it becomes a tropical cyclone to make landfall, cutting through Viti Levu.

TD04F lies to the north-north-west of Vanuatu. Fiji should start experiencing more rain and expect strong winds.

Once the cyclone has been named, a tracking map will be issued by the office.

Shipping operators have become vigilant and started issuing notices. Goundar Shipping has cancelled all trips scheduled for Wednesday.

Tourism operator South Seas Cruises said they would take heed of warnings.

So far domestic and international flights are still going, however this may change subject to the weather.

National Disaster Management Office media liaison officer Rusiate Baleilevuka said the office was on standby and awaiting word from the weather office.

People have been advised to prepare for adverse weather conditions and take heed of warnings.
