Ratu Tagive could become the first Fijian to represent Scotland in 15-aside rugby.

This was after he was named by Scotland coach Gregor Townsend in his squad for the 2020 Six Nations.

He was born in Australia to American and Fijian parents.

He was among the six uncapped players in the 38-man squad – four forwards and two backs.

Glasgow Warriors trio Tom Gordon, Kyle Steyn and Tagive are joined by Edinburgh back-row pair Luke Crosbie and Nick Haining, with Gloucester’s former Scotland U20 lock, Alex Craig, completing the group.

Townsend told The Scotsman: “We’ve put a bigger emphasis on form as a guide for our selection, with those picked backed to go out and grab their opportunity.

“A number of young players have broken through at their clubs, while the bulk of the squad [23/31] from Japan has been reselected based on some strong individual performances and huge effort throughout our World Cup camp.”

Tagive trained with the Australia Sevens squad before departing for Scotland but remains eligible to represent the USA or Fiji having not appeared for the senior Australian side.

He qualified to represent Scotland after completing his three-year residency requirements in November 2019.

He played for the Glasgow Warriors with fellow Fijians Nikola Matawalu and Leone Nakarawa.

Under coach Dave Rennie, Tagive, 26, has extended his stay at Glasgow Warriors for a further two seasons.

He is the younger brother of current US Eagles sevens extended squad member Peni Tagive. Peni, 29. was a professional rugby league player and also played collegiate football for Baylor University in Texas.

Despite appearing in only five Guinness Pro Championship matches in his two seasons with the club he has impressed the coaching staff enough while on loan with Currie in the Scottish Premiership to earn a new deal.
