School heads were advised to complete the marking of exam papers during the school week so that teachers can enjoy their holidays.

The advice came from the Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts, Rosy Akbar, while addressing heads of schools of Nadroga Navosa at Sigatoka Village on Tuesday last week.

Ms Akbar said most teachers did not enjoy their school holidays because they had many exam papers to mark.

“Students must be prepared well before the external examination. I don’t believe in study breaks. My personal stance is exam should be finished within the school days. Exam papers need to be marked, locked up, put aside and let teachers go home and enjoy their school holidays,” she said.

“The realities are that teachers mark their papers on the last week of the holidays. Plan your exam in such a way that when Term One break comes, your staff members have already marked those papers.”

She also urged the school heads to appreciate their teachers.

“A lot of things your teachers do, like road patrol and other duties, you need to appreciate them.

“Be hard on them when it comes to the formats, no compromises in terms of coverage and stuff like that. But you need to allow them to spend more time with their families during the holidays. Always promote families,” the minister said.

Ms Akbar also suggested that they not impose any work after school hours.

“Sometimes we impose the PEMAC teacher to train the athletics sports team after school hours. You should understand they have families and they have a personal life as well,” she said.
