A 69-year-old man, who is alleged to have killed an 83-year-old man in Levuka, has been remanded in custody.

Jone Durukula appeared before the High Court Judge, Justice Daniel Goundar, yesterday.

Durukula is facing a count of murder charge of Samuel Murarilal.

The alleged incident occurred on December 29, 2019, at Beach Street in Levuka.

The alleged incident took place during the midday when the deceased was walking along the street on his way home when the accused hit the deceased’s head and punched him.

The deceased died two days after succumbing to the injuries sustained.

Prosecutor from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, Sheenal Swastika, requested for 21 days to file Information and Disclosures.

She also told the court that before the caution interview, the accused was taken to the Saint Giles Hospital for a psychiatric examination.

The doctors, however, could not ascertain whether the accused was in a sound mind during the time of the alleged incident.

However, Ms Swastika told the court that as per the report compiled by the hospital, the accused was fit to plead.

Justice Goundar then asked the prosecutor whether she would request for another evaluation to be done as the report stated that the accused was hallucinating.

Ms Swastika told the court that it would be appropriate for another psychiatric evaluation to be conducted.

The matter has been adjourned for mention to February 14.
