Three youths from Makolei Village started a three-year yaqona planting plan last year.

Sipiriano Ratucoko and twin brothers Eroni Suvia and Pio Sewale plan to plant 1000 yaqona mounds every year.

Last year, the trio each planted their first 1000 mounds, with four to five plantings per mound.

Mr Ratucoko said last year Eroni Suvia (senior) from the Ministry of Forests held a workshop at Makolei Village on yaqona planting.

Three village elders, Suliasi Ratumaisala, Felaovia Lawa and Iosefo Matai, who had also attended the workshop, advised the three young men to set up their three-year yaqona plan.

Mr Ratucoko highlighted that the three elders, whom they also called their advisors, would be checking on the progress of their farms.

“We have also built our farm house and sometimes we spend the night there,” he said.

He said they also had their own plans and as for him, he would build a new home from his first harvest.

“My new home in the village would be fully furnished and the site had been confirmed,” he said.

“Money from my first harvest would also be used to pay labourers to work on my yaqona farm.

“We have the village’s full support and now we have been excused from the community works so we could concentrate on our yaqona farms.”
