All 28 confirmed cases of measles recorded in the country since January 6 have fully recovered.

This was the affirmation made by the Minister of Health and Medical Services Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete yesterday.

Dr Waqainabete said the swift response from members of the public, especially the people of the heavily affected Serua/Namosi Province during the outbreak was commendable.

He said the outbreak in Serua and Namosi was brought to an end in less than a month through the massive response efforts of the Serua/Namosi Sub-divisional Health.

“We had such an amazing response from members of the public who were conscious of their health and went ahead to get vaccinated on time, and we are grateful for that,” Dr Waqainabete said.

“The work of all medical specialists on the ground as well that worked around the clock during the outbreak is also commended,” he said.

“Respective sub-divisional outbreak response teams will continue to respond to new cases as they arise.”

Head of Health Protection at the Ministry of Health and Medical Services Dr Aalisha Sahu Khan said though there had not been any recent cases the measles taskforce of the Ministry of Health was still continuing with vaccinations.

“In the aim of not leaving anybody behind, especially with the age groups of high risk,” Dr Khan said.

“Now that we have such high coverage of vaccination around the country, we can say that we have protected most of the population.”
