Denmark’s Flemming Serristslev got an early birthday gift when he was confirmed as the new head coach for the Vodafone Fijian football team yesterday.

Serristslev turns 73 on February 18.

The no-nonsense coach has mapped out an extensive plan to take Fiji football to another level and is now ready to visit district teams around the country.

“I’ve started looking at players and will continue so,” he told SUNsports.

“I’ll be going to watch two games in Tahiti and Vanuatu.

“I’m in charge of making the best for the players in this country and will do my level best to lift Fiji football- not only the national team but for all.

“Players’ development phase always play a big place in my heart, that is to develop the boys and girls in this country.”

Serristslev said he is going to make Fiji, the best team in the region and to be on equal par or even better than New Zealand.

He is not new to the region after coaching the Papua New Guinea national side for a few years.

Fiji Football Association president Rajesh Patel said they would give all their resources to support the new coach.

“We have not let any coaches down all this year. We have always worked it out for them for the love of the sport.”

Patel said Serristslev has signed a three-year contract but did not want to reveal details of his salary and perks.

His first assignment is the Tri-Nations friendly in Churchill Park, Lautoka where Fiji play against Solomon Islands and Tahiti.

Fiji FA chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf said they would take the contract to the Fiji National Sports Commission.
