Immediate measures have been taken to address the issue of a bed bug infestation at the Lautoka City bus station.

Lautoka City Council chief executive officer Jone Nakauvadra said a routine inspection confirmed this.

This was after concerns were raised on social media regarding the clusters of bed bugs found lodged between seats at the bus station.

“During our routine inspection, the council found some bed bugs at the bus station and has taken steps to eradicate them including washing and fumigation of the bus station,” Mr Nakauvadra said.

The Lautoka Residents and Ratepayers Association interim president Allen Lockington said the bed bug infestation was mainly in the sitting area near the market toilets because the area is sheltered.

“When we usually go down and do charity work in the morning, members see the bedbugs. We highlighted the issue to say that this is the situation,” he said.

Mr Lockington acknowledged work being done by the Lautoka City Council to address the many issues faced by members of the public.

“The council cannot do everything because when those bringing the bed bugs return, they bring them back so it’s a like full cycle,” he said.
