COVID-19: Affected Workers Should Apply To FNPF Through Employers

Fijians applying for COVID-19 Fiji National Provident Fund assistance should do so through their employer.

Yesterday, the Fund had been in touch with 1,813 employers in the tourism sector and the Lautoka confined area, with 43,000 employees.

FNPF chief executive officer Jaoji Koroi said forms had been distributed to employers, which employees needed to fill.

“There are some cases whereby people are locked down in Lautoka and their employers are in Nadi, those situations are where our team will be assisting should employers need our help with applications,” he said.

“Employers will let us know, which of their staff have had their hours reduced, wages reduced or those that have taken leave without pay.”

The Fund estimates that $40 million will be dispersed for the COVID-19 assistance.

Mr Koroi said they were adequately resourced in cash in terms of delivery.

“At this stage, our focus is in the areas of those that have been identified, because this is a relief that is funded by the Government also, they will also advise us on which areas to include or not,” Mr Koroi said.

Mr Koroi said non-tourism industry workers and those outside the Lautoka confined area would not be considered. However, they could still apply for unemployment assistance, which has been reduced from $2,000 to $1000.

“This is a temporary measure that has been implemented to minimise the impact on the Fund and members’ savings especially due to the uncertainty of the extent and duration of the pandemic.

“Right now we think people should be fairly compensated that’s why other groups in the Lautoka lockdown area and those who may have lost their jobs in December will be able to access the same amount,” Mr Koroi said.

Mr Koroi is pleading with members to refrain from making false statements about the Fund’s financial status as this would only create panic and irrational decisions.

Members cannot apply for both the COVID-19 assistance and unemployment assistance.
