The Advisory Councillor of Soasoa settlement in Labasa is urging the 280 residents of the lockdown area to adhere to precautionary measures implemented by the authorities.

A 240-square-metre portion of Soasoa was placed on a 14-day lockdown by the Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama, following the announcement of five new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, two of which were from the area.

Timoci Biroko said: “People are to remain at home and continue to wash and sanitise their hands.

“For everyone’s safety, arrangements have been made to deliver the food to the checkpoint areas from tomorrow (today) and we’re working closely with the Provincial office.”

There are four checkpoints erected in the four main entries into the area, with Police officers actively manning the area.

In his nationwide address on Saturday, Mr Bainimarama said the lock down area included the surrounding homes, and neighbours that the patient in Soasoa came into contact with.

“If it’s determined that the spread has risked going beyond these boundaries, we will expand them accordingly,” he said.

Fiji has recorded 12 cases of individuals who have contracted COVID-19.
