Twenty-six Fijians sustained injuries during the devastating impact of Tropical Cyclone Harold on Wednesday, says Dr Jemesa Tudravu.

The Ministry of Health chief medical adviser said one of the victims was seriously injured on his upper limb and required an emergency operation at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.

During a press conference, Dr Tudravu said: “We do not have details on the type of injuries they had sustained but we have been informed that 25 of them were minor injuries and have been assessed, treated and sent home.”

He said the focus of the ministry now was to inspect evacuation centres carrying awareness on non-communicable diseases and COVID-19 together with food and water supply.

National Disaster Management Office director Vasiti Soko said they were grateful to the Government of New Zealand for providing a P3 Orion Aircraft to take aerial images of the affected islands for damage assessment.

As of 3pm yesterday, a total of 197 evacuation centres remained open with 6240 evacuees in the evacuation centres.

The Central Division had 1829, Western Division 2749, Northern Division 628 and 1034 in the Eastern Division.
