The Ministry of Health and Medical Services was yesterday given $50,000 worth of hygiene and cleaning products by Fiji Chemicals which would normally have to be procured from overseas.

Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete said this would ensure that Fiji was able to provide free health services during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said the chemicals provided by Fiji Chemicals were essential.

“With COVID-19 impacting the world, some chemicals have been very hard to procure,” Dr Waqainabete said.

“This is something that is used very wisely around the world, there have been occasions where hospitals in other countries have ran out of sanitisers.”

Fiji Chemicals director Darran Bentley Fisher said the company was grateful for the tremendous contribution by health professionals to the country.

“These are challenging times and we appreciate the work done by doctors, nurses, and all health professionals across the country,” Mr Bentley Fisher said.

“This is a small way of saying thank you and we are committed to supporting their important work going forward.”

Dr Waqainabete said Fiji Chemicals would also provide expert help on the use of chemicals to train staff.

So far, only three active cases of COVID-19 remain in Fiji.

Dr Waqainabete said regular testing was being conducted.
