The Republic of Fiji Military Force has lost one of its highest-ranking women officers, Lieutenant-Colonel Laisani Kinikini Vulakouvaki.

Lieutenant-Colonel Vulakouvaki was promoted last year from Major to Commanding Officer (CO) of the RFMF’s Logistics Support Unit (LSU).

She was one of the first seven women recruited to join the RFMF in 1988.

Three of the seven women were now RFMF senior officers. The others were Colonel Litea Seruiratu and Lieutenant-Colonel Silipa Druavesi Vananalagi.

Lieutenant-Colonel Vulakouvaki’s son, Lorima Sautu Junior said that his mother was an amazing person, was very down to earth and would be missed by many.

He said last Thursday his mother went to a clinic to get her tooth extracted.

“When she returned, she was feeling a bit unwell and had to go back to the clinic at Delainabua.

“When she got there, she was immediately referred to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, because she had low blood pressure,” he said.

“She was recovering well, however she died later that day.”

Her reguregu will begin from Tuesday with burial arrangements still in discussion.

Lieutenant-Colonel Vulakauvaki was from Lutu, Wainibuka, in Naitasiri with maternal links to Galoa Village in Kadavu.

She is survived by husband, Lorima Sautu Senior and their nine children.
