Eight children in Navua had their heart screened at the Sai Prema Foundation on Friday.

About 70 people from the Taiperia and Wainividio communities were part of the outreach at the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Medical Centre in Nasese, 40 of whom were children.

Mereoni Bale of Taiperia Village was blessed to have her family be part of the free health check up.

“I have been having chest pains for a long time and I am thankful I was given free medication and treatment for it,” she said.

“I also brought my four children and one of them has asthma attacks on certain basis and through this foundation, she is able to get the right treatment. We look forward to coming again in a few weeks’ time.”

General practitioner and medical coordinator of the Sai Prema Foundation Fiji, Dr Krupali Tappoo, said: “A HD stethoscope was used, which is an intelligence stethoscope used to screen the heart. On the screen, you can see if there are any murmurs or abnormalities.

“So out of the 40 children, about eight of them had some murmurs and they have been booked to come in for their heart screening with our doctors, cardiologists in the coming weeks to have an echo scan on their hearts.”

The foundation, through its Health on Wheels programme, provided free check ups and transportation for the villagers.
