About 20 youths in the Western Division made time for members of the Nakavika Settlement in Ba to help them plant 500 mangrove saplings.

The project focused on protecting the coastal area because mangroves that were previously planted by the World Wide Fund for Nature were destroyed by recent tropical cyclones.

The youths, who were from the Western Youth Empire group, worked in partnership with the Ministry of Forestry, University of Fiji, Providing Young Generation Movement in Every Society group, Wainamo Youth Club, Doulomani Youth Club and Save the Children Fiji. The youth groups were financially supported by the Volatabu Group.

President for the Western Youth Empire, Jonasa Radidisa, said the teams were keen to help with the project.

“This initiative, the planting of the 500 mangrove seedlings, is all giving back to Mother Nature and helping these people at the same time,” he said.

“They thanked us for taking the initiative in helping out their community.”

The youth groups will visit other villages in the coming weeks to also assist in planting mangrove saplings.
