Fiji Police Probe Fake Bainimarama Foundation Page On Facebook

Police are investigating a fake Facebook page that has been using Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama’s name to collect money from Fijians who are interested in becoming members.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the fake page was named “The Bainimarama Foundation”.

She confirmed that a complaint was made against this fake page last week.

“The Police cybercrime team has been alerted and we are currently investigating the matter,” she said.

Mr Bainimarama, while speaking on the Noda Paraiminista talkback show on Fijian Broadcasting Corporation’s Radio Fiji One, said he was only made aware of the page when a man called to inform him that he had deposited $300 to the foundation account.

“The Bainimarama Foundation Facebook page is fake,” Mr Bainimarama said.

“The account was closed by Facebook in the last 24 hours with the help of Police.”

He said the Government wasn’t looking into setting up foundations to demand money from Fijians.

He has urged every Fijian to be vigilant and beware of impersonators trying to gain from the current crisis.
