Police are investigating the parents of a one year and seven months old child for negligence, says Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro.

Miss Naisoro said Sitiveni Maya was allegedly left in the care of his nine-year-old brother when he drowned in the Utelei river in Nadi on Friday.

Asenaca Baulawa, 30, said she couldn’t believe what had happened to her youngest son because she always took him anywhere she went.

“I was shocked by what had happened to my youngest child. Everywhere I go I always take him with me,” Ms Baulawa said.

“Yesterday, (Friday) we went to do some cooking at our neighbour’s house. He was playing with other kids outside. I kept on calling his name just to check on him.

“After a few minutes when I called, nobody answered. Siti happens to follow other kids down to the river.”

She said while looking for him, a relative had found Siti floating and brought him to her.

“Siti was unconscious and his body was warm.

“We hurriedly rushed him to the hospital, but unfortunately he was dead on the way. I cried and could not believe he was really gone.”

The mother of four said her son was a happy child and always cared for any person who passed by their home.

The incident occurred near the Matavouvou Settlement in Korovuto on Friday afternoon.

Siti was pronounced dead on arrival at the Nadi Hospital.

The drowning death toll stands at 20 compared to 21 for the same period last year.

Parents and guardians are reminded that the issue of supervision must not be taken lightly.
