Bogus agents have been targeting the cane farming areas seeking commission from farmers if they wanted a special grant.

The Sugar Cane Growers Council acting chief executive officer Sunil Chaudhary has advised cane farmers to be wary of these people.

He highlighted that:

  • The Council want cane growers to be aware that these fake agents make phone call requests demanding the growers pay commission to be entitled for a certain grant which will be approved under their name.
  • The caller claims to be a staff member of the Sugar Cane Growers Council and requests the cane grower for his or her bank account details and then asks the grower to deposit the commission immediately into an M-Paisa account.
  • The Council wishes to advise the general public that there is no such grant in place
  • and no such scheme which will require them to pay a deposit nor commission into someone’s personal account.

Advise

“Please refrain from getting involved in such scams.

“If you are unclear of anything in relation to your grant applications or sugar industry matters, please directly visit to your nearest SCGC District office,” Mr Chaudhary said.

He has asked all farmers who have received such requests to report the matter to Police.
