5-Year-Old Child Takes Stand In Rape Case

A five-year-old took the stand at the High Court in Suva on Monday to tell the court how she was allegedly raped and assaulted. This is in the trial of a 30-year-old salesman who is facing a charge of rape and of sexual assault.

The trial is presided by Justice Daniel Goundar.

The state is represented by Swastika Sharma from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions while the accused is represented by Kavshik Prasad from the Legal Aid Commission.

The complainant took the stand behind closed doors and protected by the screen from seeing the accused while she relayed to the court of what the accused had allegedly done to her on April 2, 2019, at her home in Suva.

The trial will continue on October 12. Bail for the accused has been extended.
