70-Year-Old Wins Agriculture Award
Woman in Agriculture award winner, 70-year-old Daya Wati with Agriculture Minister Mahendra Reddy, in Labasa on October 22, 2020.

Age doesn’t matter in farming, says Daya Wati after she won the Woman in Agriculture Award yesterday.

Being healthy and active can help you do whatever you want, she said. The agriculture awards for the Northern Division were hosted by the Ministry of Agriculture, and held at Subrail Park, Labasa.

Money In Vegetable Farming
Ms Wati, now 70-years old, started farming when she was 24. She also trains students in the field of agriculture. Ms Wati plants vegetables and crops with the support of her family. The Tabia-resident said she earned more money from selling cabbage and beans. “I am happy that the Ministry of Agriculture has always supported me and they have been recognising me from the past years,” Ms Wati said.

Be Independent
She advised youths to move out from their parents homes to start building something for themselves. While she previously received recognition and certificates for her work in agriculture, she was somewhat more proud of herself yesterday after receiving the woman in agriculture award. “My husband is a sugarcane farmer, and produces 400 tonnes of canes,” she said.

Parental Influence
“I am happy that my parents moulded me in such a way that I continue to serve Fijians even at the age of 70. We don’t use any chemicals in our vegetables, I have been using the old way of farming,” she said.

Her farming has enabled her to support her two grandchildren’s education. She also bought a farm tractor with implements and two trucks for farm use, and paid for the renewal of her land lease with the i-Taukei Land Trust Board. Ms Wati has bought two housing properties in Suva and a farm family vehicle.

The Ministry of Agriculture Northern Division 20202 Agriculture Show staged 34 booths, with a wide representation of the agriculture sector. The Ministry of Agriculture will host the next show in the Western Division next week.
