Thirty-one Fijians were recognised by the President, Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote at the State House yesterday.

They were given the 50th anniversary of independence commemorative medal.

Among the recipients was Dr Mosese Ligani.

Hailing from Kiuva, Tailevu, the 87-year-old felt honoured after receiving his medal.

“As I came back to my seat after receiving the medal, I realised that even thou I am retired, our humble good works of service will always come back to surprise us with good honours,” he said.

The retired dentist began his dental career in 1957 and retired in 2000, giving the best dental service he could give to Fijians. In 2001, he was the Acting Director of the Dental Service.

“I dedicate this medal to my lovely wife for her continued support, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren for always being there for me and my wife,” he said.

Retired Dr Ligani has 3 children, 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

 

Sumeet Satyam Tapoo

Sai Prema Foundation Fiji director, Sumeet Tappoo was deeply humbled and honored to receive such a medal.

“I was really surprised with the call informing me of the medal presentation and that itself has motivated me to keep doing more for our nation,”

With the foundation located in Nasese, it is the South Pacific’s first ever free Children’s Heart hospital.

The state-of-the-art hospital is near completion as it will help children of all ages and background with the concept of giving better heart surgery care.

Mr Tappoo is a global inspiration to millions of young adults for his action and advocacy of the five human values of Love, Truth, Peace, Non-violence and Right Conduct.

 

Pastor Atunaisa Vulaono

For New-Methodist Fellowship Church, Senior Pastor, Atunaisa Vulaono, he said: “It came as a shock for me when I was informed about receiving the commemorative medal and I am thankful to God and family for such an opportunity.

 

“One thing about New-Methodist is that the church is to serve the nation with the Word. We can spend thousands of dollars just to serve the people with the Word regardless,” Pastor Vulaono said.

 

A thousand medals to be given Out

A total of 1000 commemorative medals will be given out to well deserving Fijians by the President Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote to mark Fiji’s 50th anniversary of independence.

This was confirmed yesterday by the Chair of the nomination committee, Dr Akenisi Kedreyaki.

“We had 1000 medals where were intending to give 500 to the women and 500 to the men.

“We wanted to recognise people because the building of Fiji is not just through business, it is through tourism, community service, development in the rural areas, development in sports, arts, culture, medical field, education, judicial and many more and we equalize all these.
