Savusavu former hotel worker, Melania Bukamoto, was among the hundreds who lost their jobs in the tourism industry during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Six months of being jobless, lazing around at home affected her emotionally, even leaving her depressed. Then she decided, enough was enough.

Ms Bukamoto who worked at the Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort-Fiji for four years until the pandemic hit is originally from Sese Village in Saqani, Cakaudrove.

When Ms Bukamoto heard about the Government’s COVID-19 Concessional Finance Support Packages to aid Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), she applied.

And when she was successful, she started her yaqona vendor and money-lending business.

“I buy the kava (yaqona) from farmers and sell them. And in addition to this is money lending which is running smoothly operating from my home in Savusavu,” Ms Bukamoto said.

“I am trying my best to recover the costs and make sure that my new business thrives so that I can repay my loan in time which will start in September 2022,” she said.

The loan recipient is thankful to the Government’s assistance during this crisis that will surely help her family.
